An equine corpus hemorrhagicum (CH)

Keywords: ultrasound, ovary, equine, CH, corpus, hemorrhagicum

A CH seen by transrectal ultrasonography at the beginning of the breeding season. Like many corpora hemorrhagica, it shows fibrin strands bridging the area previously occupied by the antrum of the follicle. This appearance may persist for more than a week, gradually becoming more homogeneous but because this appearance may persist for some time, it is not possible to estimate the age of the CH with accuracy.

If the follicle and the size of the CH are normal, conception rates appear to be normal. However, in the author's experience, at the onset and especially the end of the breeding season when very large (6 to 10 cm diameter) corpora hemorrhagica are seen,  conception rates at those ovulations  are poor.
